Affectionately known to her close family, friends & community as Dee she stands as the sole bread winner in a single headed household which she shares with her elderly mother Joyce Southern aged 74, her recovering substance-user aged 17 and her daughter aged 13 in Eldorado Park.
Dereleen has recently captured the headlines of local and national publications; radio and television networks alike on her plight to get the nation, more especially the government, to listen to her plea as a single mother burdened by the dire effects of the drug epidemic.
James a resident and a mother of a 17 year old who got addicted to tik while at school has had enough and she decided to take on the whole system. After much abuse at the hands of her son, who stole household goods to feed his habit – and the fear of seeing him turn into a violent monster in May 2013 she authored an open letter to the State President of South Africa, addressing him as “Dad”.
The letter went viral on social networks & media publications. She had no idea that this letter would reach the President of the Republic of South Africa, Jacob Zuma who later visited the community of Eldorado Park south of Joburg who has had enough drugs and drug lords parading the community. During this visit, his Excellency expressed the dismay at the disaster and pledged his support by promising to shut down all lolly lounges , the area drug dens. He further asked the Police Minister to look into allegations of police corruption; promised to get by-laws adjusted to drug lords cannot hide behind them; promised to provide better and safe rehabilitation and also promised to provide jobs by getting factories to be built in & around Eldorado Park.
These setbacks spurred James and members of the community on to speak out and get more involved in assisting addicts and their families who suffer with so much stigma, shame, isolation and hopelessness. They are now taking the fight back to the streets and saying: ENOUGH ALREADY!!
